University City Apartments. One of the most amazing transformations of an urban neighborhood has taken place in the western section of center city Philadelphia, especially over the last 30 years. University City's main claim to fame is the expanding campuses and facilities of Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. But much of this neighborhood's rich history can be traced back to the mid-1800s, when fashionable Philadelphians crossed the Schuylkill River and headed west into the wide green spaces of Fairmount Park to build large row homes and mansions.

Take a walk around University City and you'll see a time capsule of the area's character unfold before you--from the ivy-covered halls, Victorian brownstones and gothic towers of Penn's campus to the treelined streets that house a prominent building on just about every corner. The grand old buildings stand in contrast to the new structures that are making the area a major center of education, medicine, information sciences, as well as a cultural melting pot. New stores, restaurants, services and conveniences are unfolding along the cobbled walkways to create a dynamic college town within a big city.

On the northern fringe of the campus, in a neighborhood characterized by large Italianate and Victorian homes, is a landmark complex that was transformed from an old Quaker mission and a working home for the blind into a luxury apartment community. It's another study in contrasts, and one more example of how University City excels at urban living
