Imagine living in Philadelphia at the turn of the 20th
century. The Industrial Revolution was going in full gear, and the
manufacturing plants in and around the city were cranking out products
that made Philadelphia one of the world's major producers.
While the city was hard at work, businesses expanded, residential neighborhoods
developed, and the downtown area prospered as retailers, restaurants,
cultural and entertainment venues opened to serve the increasingly
important city center.
In 1903, the classic five-story complex that was built at 17th &
Callowhill to house the Harrington Machine Company was typical of
the mills and factories being built in urban industrial areas along
the east coast. The red brick façade was designed to blend
with the row homes lining the neighboring streets. As electricity
was a precious commodity in those days, the factory was built with
oversized windows to flood natural light into the facility. And
since the Harrington company was one of America's most progressive
manufacturers of industrial hoists, the building featured such integral
details as massive floor-to-ceiling height, heavy timbered beams
and columns.
The Harrington building served many commercial purposes throughout much
of the 20th century, but it was raised from obsolesce and given
new life when Historic Landmarks acquired the rundown property in
1984 and spent $12 million to transform it into The Lofts at Logan
View.
Little expense was spared to create a uniquely designed apartment
community of 108 distinctive loft residences. Every effort was made
to retain authentic architectural details in the lavish restoration.
The façade was painstakingly restored and returned to its
original splendor. Step inside the spacious lobby, where an original
overhead hoist has been left in place, and see how the high ceilings,
exposed brick and wood beams were integrated with contemporary furnishings
to fashion an inviting welcome home. The drama continues in the
apartments, where innovative, multi-level loft designs will inspire
you to use your imagination for furnishing and accessorizing. Enormous
windows and high ceilings flood rooms with plenty of natural light.
Spiral staircases rise to second floor bedrooms or dens, with balconies
overlooking living or dining areas. In fact nothing has been overlooked
to offer you all the style, all the quality, all the features you'd
expect living in a landmark.
We've blended the best of the past with the features of today
to offer you a lifestyle that rises to a loftier level.
