Around 1880, the railroad arrived and with it came a radical change that would
transform the area forever. In just a few years sleepy, little Lowertown
became the wholesale, manufacturing and transportation hub of the Twin Cities
and all of the upper Midwest, stretching westward from Chicago to Denver.
Most of the new commercial buildings constructed in the Lowertown area between
1880 and 1910 were designed by many of St. Paul's most talented architects,
and in a variety of architectural styles.
The handsome, classic revival building that was constructed at the corner
of East 4th Street and (tbd) in 1905 was the original home of the St. Paul
Rubber Company. In later years the building was occupied as manufacturing
and warehousing space for American Television & Radio. While almost
100 years old, the building was named to the National Register of Historic
Places in 1985 and has aged gracefully, especially after being given new
life by Historic Landmarks For Living in 1987, when it was transformed into
a luxurious apartment community.
Great care was taken to preserve the significant architectural details of
this proud landmark, and complement them with a host of contemporary features.
The impressive two-story entrance portico, with it's three monumental two-story
lonic columns, was artfully refurbished. The building's interior core was
gutted to make way for a dramatic entry way and atrium, soaring seven stories
above the lobby, with an overhead walkway stretching from beam to beam to
create a stunning aerial view. Apartment details are just as impressive.
Original, thick northern Minnesota timber beams were refinished and bricks
were glazed to add style and texture to every residence, as well as evoke
images of the building's illustrious past. The original, 8-foot industrial
windows and high ceilings were incorporated to invite plenty of natural
light. And such quality features as fully-equipped gourmet kitchens, plush
wall-to-wall carpeting, unique built-ins, on-site fitness center and enclosed
parking garage were added to make Lowertown an uncommon landmark for luxury
living.
Choose the floorplan that best suits your needs and sense of style, from spacious
one-bedroom and one-bedroom lofts to generously-sized two-bedroom/two-bath
apartments. Some residences feature multi-purpose dens and most offer dazzling
views of downtown St. Paul.
The building has gone through quite a stretch over the course of its history,
from early rubber producing facility to radio and tv manufacturing plant
to luxury residential community. Today, Lowertown Commons stands as a true
classic, combining an artful blend of vintage architectural style with cosmopolitan
amenities and conveniences. And the result is the most preferred residential
landmark in town!
