Imagine growing up in downtown Harrisburg
during the early 1900s. The area was a progressive American city, where
the political dealings of an important capitol city served as a backdrop
to the commercial, industrial and agricultural industries that were thriving along the
river neighborhoods of the mighty Susquehanna. Teens who were intent on
capitalizing on the Industrial Revolution were candidates to attend the
new Tech High School built on the corner of 4th & Walnut in 1910.
This impressive cut-stone structure was designed by prominent architect,
Charles Lloyd, and became the model of excellence in the Keystone State.
The imposing facade and ornately detailed lobby with its marble floors,
oak paneling and brass details were created, according to Lloyd, "to
uplift the pupil by emphasizing the grandiose nature of the environment."
In 1928 Lloyd supervised the remodeling of Tech High into Harrisburg's
City Hall. While the expansive main lobby and grand staircase were preserved,
Lloyd added a magnificent first-floor mayor's office crafted of antique
wood paneling and a suspended white cast plaster ceiling.
In 1982 the building was given new life when Philadelphia-based developer,
Historic Landmarks For Living, brought its remarkable track record for
stunning restorations of rundown historic properties to Harrisburg and
transformed the proud old City Hall building into a luxury residence of
82 distinctive loft apartments. Great care was taken to preserve the original
architectural details of the grand lobby and to create remarkable residences
that offered a full complement of contemporary amenities and conveniences.
Oversized windows were retained to shed the apartments with plenty of
natural light. Bi-level lofts were created to maximize the openness of
the 16-foot ceilings. Fully equipped kitchens, elegant baths, and innovative
floorplans were a few of the features that were designed to make Old City
Hall the most preferred address in town.
Some old buildings age gracefully and some just get old and tired...
but Old City Hall has gotten better with age. You owe it to yourself to
discover why nothing compares to living in a landmark!
