Exactly as its name suggests, University City is an
area bounded by college campuses, teaching hospitals, museums, theaters
and the hum of academic life. Two of the larger institutions, University
of Pennsylvania and Drexel University, serve as temporary homes to 30,000
students plus thousands more professors, residents and related staff.
The historic Penn campus, founded in 1749 by Benjamin
Franklin and a group of fellow civic leaders as an academy for men,
now sprawls over 250 acres and encompasses 100 academic departments.
Many of Philadelphia's leading architects of the 19th and early 20th
centuries had a hand in shaping the university, designing an interesting
juxtaposition of ivy-covered brick, Victorian-style buildings alongside
impressive modern structures.
Drexel University, which excels in engineering,
business and computer sciences is growing as well, and now serves as
the centerpiece of a thriving technology district. Both campuses come
together as integral neighbors, offering the combined amenities and comforts
of a small college town, yet all the conveniences of big city living.
Take a walk around Old Quaker's Powelton Village neighborhood in University
City and you'll find peaceful streets lined with huge old row homes,
former mansions of many of Philadelphia's wealthiest citizens between
the years 1850-1950, and in more recent years they became homes and
apartments of people associated with academic life. Many of the streets
are offset by courtyards and landscaped squares. And on most every street
you'll see an important structure--a museum, a theater, a library, a
college hall, a research building, a medical facility, a gallery--all
vital building blocks of a city within a city.
The area is now in an exciting transition. As the
colleges and hospitals and technology centers continue to expand, many
new developments are taking shape--new shopping centers and retailers,
an appetizing array of restaurants with an international flavor, entertainment
venues, arts & cultural facilities, essential services and corner
stores--everything is coming together to transform University City into
one of the most dynamic neighborhoods in Philadelphia and along the
east coast.
Living in a landmark building like Old Quaker, and being in the center of it
all, exemplifies all that is great about a cosmopolitan lifestyle.
