Parkside Commons St. Paul. Imagine living in St. Paul at the turn of the 20th century, when the area was going through a dramatic growth period and establishing itself as the manufacturing and transportation hub of the Twin Cities and all of the upper Midwest. Even the once sleepy residential neighborhood of Lowertown experienced a rebirth as a vital center of commerce, and many of the most talented architects of the day were called upon to design commercial buildings in the downtown district that had panache as well as purpose.

One of those buildings, developed to house the Gotzian Shoe Company on East 5th Street, was designed by acclaimed architect, Cass Gilbert, who also designed the U.S. Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C., the famed Woolworth Building in New York, as well as Minnesota's own beaux-arts masterpiece, the State Capitol building. Gilbert's stately Gotzian complex was noted for its unique Victorian Romanesque architectural style that was more intriguing than industrial. Massive granite piers topped with a huge decorative sash form the base of the building. Above them, large rounded arched windows are capped with a classical cornice. It's no wonder that this enduring landmark was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. St. Paul Apartments.

Two years later, Historic Landmarks For Living transformed this once proud relic into a dynamic residential community, taking great care to restore the significant original architectural details and complement them with contemporary amenities. Today, you'll find The Parkside is the perfect harmony of past and present. Century-old thick timbered beams and cast-iron columns have been incorporated with exposed brick walls to add style and texture to every apartment. The original arched windows and high ceilings became prominent features, inviting plenty of natural light into airy, open spaces. Living spaces were creatively designed for uncommon comfort with one-of-a-kind floorplans, ranging from spacious studios to one and two-bedroom platform residences, many offering roomy, multi-purpose dens. And all were enhanced with an endless array of quality features-fully-equipped gourmet kitchens, unique built-ins, plush wall-to-wall carpeting, on-site fitness center and much more.

While the building is steeped in history, from its early days as a shoe factory to its status as a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places, today The Parkside is well-known for being one of the most preferred residential addresses in town. And for good reason. It offers an artful blend of classic architectural styles, a quality restoration, innovative design, and incomparable luxury features-everything you'd expect in an enduring landmark!
