Sail Cloth Factory The tale of the Sail Cloth Factory starts in 1888, during an age when Baltimore's thriving waterfront was home to the many businesses and industries that were sprouting up to keep pace with the growth of America's most active seaport. Stretching from the harbor up and down major streets such as Pratt and Lombard, distinctive midrise commercial buildings were constructed practically overnight. On the corner of Pratt & Fremont, the Gandy Belting Company built an impressive five-story brick complex for the manufacturing of sail cloth, a fabric that was initially used for maritime purposes and later on as belting material for early 20th century industrial machinery.

The transition from commercial landmark to luxury apartment building over a one hundred year period was not exactly smooth sailing. After World War II the Baltimore Port began to lose its prominence, the downtown area began to decay and the Gandy building became a warehouse for Hutlzer's Department Stores. By the 1980's, downtown Baltimore was in the initial stages of a dramatic renaissance, as the ambitious new Inner Harbor development revitalized the area with new retail, restaurants, hotels, recreational amenities and many reasons to re-discover the area as a working, shopping and visiting destination.

Sail Cloth Factory During this period prominent Philadelphia-based real estate rehabber, Historic Landmarks For Living, was transforming rundown historic commercial properties across the country into dazzling new luxury apartment communities. In 1986, Historic Landmarks spent millions to convert the once proud Gandy/Hutzler property into the Sail Cloth Factory, a lavishly restored residential building boasting 107 distinctive apartments. In the process, great care was taken to preserve the significant architectural details of the past and complement them with contemporary amenities. The result features handsomely designed common areas and apartment interiors that are generously sized and creatively detailed.

Another significant feature of living at Sail Cloth is the fact that you are within walking distance of America's most dynamic downtown district. Close to incredible shopping and dining attractions. Close to major entertainment venues, government buildings, the business center of Baltimore and University of Maryland's thriving downtown campus.Everything you could possibly want is a short walk or quick drive from Sail Cloth.

If you're looking for a luxurious lifestyle, an apartment residence that is like no other and a smooth move where you are indulged with service with a style, set your sights on The Sail Cloth Factory...the most prestigious landmark building in town!
