From the early American settlements to
the arrival of European immigrants, Pittsburgh has embodied America's
great push towards progress. It has long been regarded as being a city
of many "firsts" and the cornerstone of the Industrial Age that
modernized the early 20th century. Important names around town-Carnegie,
Mellon, Heinz, Alcoa, Westinghouse-are prominent reminders of Pittsburgh's
proud past. The burgeoning industry of manufacturing led to the development
of support services and supply companies, and the old Bindley Hardware
Company was headed for big expansion.
In 1903, John Bindley, called on his architect brother to design a building
for the family's growing hardware concern. The Amberson Avenue site was
selected for its proximity to downtown Pittsburgh, as well as for the
wide-open spaces of then "suburban" Shadyside.
The imposing, four-story brick complex was noted for its unusual combination
of late-Victorian industrial design and large-scale classicism. It features
three identical facades enhanced by a series of repetitive bays. On the
second floor, massive arched brick piers rise two stories to be crowned
by a handsome brick cornice in the French Neo-Grec style of architecture.
Today, these impressive features remain intact, as do the tall windows
and such solid construction details as three-inch thick plank floors and
heavy timbered beam ceilings.
In 1985, the old Bindley building was named to the National Register of
Historic Places, and Philadelphia-based developer, Historic Landmarks
For Living, acquired the property and spent millions to transform it into
a luxurious apartment community.Great care was taken to blend the significant
architectural details of the past with contemporary amenities and conveniences.
A handsome main entrance lobby and seating area were created to serve
as a warm welcome to an uncommon atmosphere. Original brick walls were
left exposed to add style and texture to each apartment. Oversized windows
and dramatic high ceilings were designed to flood rooms
with plenty of natural light. Timbered beams and columns were left to
evoke images of the building's proud past. And such quality features as
fully equipped gourmet kitchens, decorator lighting, plush wall-to-wall
carpeting, unique built-ins and the convenience of underground parking
were added to make Shadyside an uncommon landmark for luxury living.
Choose the floorplan that best suits your needs and sense of style, from
spacious studios to creative one-bedroom lofts to generously sized two-bedroom
apartments. Some residences offer views of the beautifully landscaped
courtyard. Regardless of choice, if you are looking for uncompromising
luxury, uncommon style, quality management and incomparable convenience
you'll
find that you have plenty in common with Shadyside!
