The area that is now known as Palmyra was originally populated in the mid 1600's by the Lenni Lenape Indians, a tribe that found the good land, unbroken forests, clear streams and lush vegetation perfect for establishing a settlement. Soon the valley attracted explorers and traders from the east, and by the early 1700's European settlers were drawn by its appeal of good farming and religious freedom. One of the more prominent immigrants, Dr. John Palm, a country doctor and Revolutionary War patriot, has been given credit for founding the town of Palmyra in the mid-1700's.
This beautiful farming paradise in the heart of Lebanon Valley continued to grow well into the early 20th century as new thruways and navigable waterways made it possible to transport produce to markets near and far, as well as the goods, grains and minerals that were the by-products of Palmyra's booming industries.
