Imagine what life was like in colonial Philadelphia. As the birthplace of America the city was the center of government and commerce and everything else that was important to life in the new nation. Everything centered around the old city neighborhood, from the busy port of the Delaware River back to Independence Hall on 6th Street. The cobblestoned streets were lined with businesses, shops, inns and stalls where farmers and fishermen sold their daily catch. Most of the buildings in the area housed statesmen, bankers and merchants, or they served as prominent landmarks in the governing of America.

On one of the oldest streets in Old City, Letitia Street, the narrow thorofare was barely wide enough to accommodate the horse drawn carriages that came and went from the buildings that lined the alleyway. Most of the properties along Letitia Street conducted business on the first floor and housed the merchants on the upper floors. By the mid-1800's, as Old City continued to prosper as the center for commerce, the smaller colonial-era buildings were razed and replaced with taller buildings that were more suitable for warehousing and manufacturing.

The three buildings on Letitita Street that are now home to Waterfront I were part of the new wave of construction, built in the early 1870's. The distinctive brick, wood and cast iron facades of each of the Waterfront buildings are defining elements of the architectural style of the period. The elaborate brick corbled cornices, tri-partite cast iron columns and huge arched windows are also details that have withstood the passage of time.

Over $2 million was spent to transform 31–35 Letitia Street into Waterfront I. Great care was taken to preserve and refurbish the original historic facades of each of the buildings. Inside the brick walls, timbered beams and plank ceilings were painstakingly restored to reflect the original purpose of the properties. The idea was to create bright, airy contemporary living spaces while retaining the charm and character of an earlier era.

This unique complex now houses 28 luxury apartment residences, each offering airy floorplans that will appeal to your sense of style and imagination. While several of the apartments feature wood burning stoves or fireplaces, all offer gourmet kitchens, plush wall-to-wall carpeting, and all the quality amenities you'd expect in a Landmark building.

Best of all, while little Letitia Street is still a peaceful retreat from the rest of town, you're as close as you want to be to all the attractions of a dynamic city. If you have the notion that you’d like to live in a place that isn’t a typical apartment building, come take a look at where the residential revolution really began!
